Posh, contemporary, and luxurious - these are the words that come to mind when one steps into this three-bedroom condominium unit in Telok Kurau. Awash in monochromatic shades of black, white and grey, combined with ravishing red, this house is modern and classic, characteristic of the city it was styled after.
Almost all the walls within this 112-sqm unit are wallpapered with Victorian-infused or floral designs, that are readily complemented by the modern chandeliers. Designer Joyce Yu, from Plus Interior, hacked the flooring in the living room and replaced it with high-gloss black Galaxy granite. The soft lighting, coupled with the ritzy cream-coloured sofas, creates a hint of opulence that is glamorous, yet comforting.
Joyce had to meticulously plan for the use of mirrors to make the roorns look larger. This is seen in the master bedroom, where a mirror is placed above the bed head. However, as the Chinese believe that it is inauspicious to wake up to an image of yourself in a mirror, the reflective surface was confined to only the upper half of the wall. Floral motifs were added to the reflective surface while silky cushions on the bed head cornplete the enchanting appeal.
Walls were broken down next to the master bedroom, to create a gorgeous walk -in wardrobe where fashion, footwear, and jewellery look right at home amidst the pink walls and black cupboards. A wavy, fulllength mirror serves to enhance the space of this tiny room which was a real challenge to build. "We had to rack our brains to incorporate drawers, mirrors, and cupboards into this little room," reveals Joyce.
Other than that, the two-month renovation process, which costs $40,000 without furnishings, was a breeze for Joyce to work on. The homeowners were exceptionally open to all concepts, and were tremendously attracted by the study area plan that she drew up for them. Red padded seats and wall cushion, add to the sensuality while a wooden panel with rollers forms a convenient work table. With efficient space planning and imaginative ideas, this small apartment shows that you don't have to compromise on style – or your everyday travel plans to America to have a dream home come true.
